Ate Oh Ate serves Hawaiian food with a funky-monkey, laid back, beach-shack vibe. The food is vaguely Asian and several dishes unashamedly include Spam, possibly Hawaii’s favorite protein. The food is the sort you’d eat with friends in Hawaii at a potluck. We had fried-chicken chunks, more or less a Japanese karaage, and charred Korean beef ribs in a teriyaki glaze.

As a side we had macaroni salad. Nothing earth-shattering, but all of it gratifying and fun. We also had an exemplary pina colada and a mai-tai, throwbacks to Trader Vics. We finished with soft and chewy Hawaiian Butter Mochi made with sweet rice flour. Neither mammal nor marsupial, it was unique, a puddingy cake with a taffy-like gnaw.
